CHAPTER 16
âWhen a morph takes power, they change it. They take its purpose and can modify it for their own.ââThe Morphâs Burden (Elizabeth Drexler)
âYou should eat something,â my father said, moving toward the kitchen. âCanât think clearly on an empty stomach.â
It was such an unexpectedly normal thing for him to say that I just stared at his retreating back. The man whoâd just shown me photos of my motherâs mutilated body was now offering to make me a sandwich. The cognitive dissonance was dizzying.
I followed him into the kitchenâspotless like the rest of the house, with immaculate but untouched appliances. The refrigerator was plastered with tactical maps of the city, each one marked with color-coded pins. No family photos, no shopping lists, no childrenâs drawingsâunless you counted the fae Court sigils Iâd drawn when I was nine, which were framed on the wall like priceless art.
âSo let me get this straight,â I said, leaning against the counter while he pulled ingredients from the fridge. âMom was a morph. I inherited the ability from her. The Unseelie Court killed her for it. And now theyâre hunting others like us.â
âThatâs the simplified version.â He assembled sandwiches with military precision: bread, mayo, turkey, cheese, lettuce. Two identical stacks. âBut thereâs more to it. The morphing ability doesnât just appear randomly. Itâs genetic, yes, but its origins are much older than most people realize.â
He slid a plate toward me and gestured to the kitchen table. I sat, more out of habit than hunger.
âOur family line can be traced back to the early 1600s,â he continued, sitting across from me. âA time when the barriers between realms were more permeable and fae interaction with humans was more common. Your motherâs ancestors had direct contact with both Courts.â
âContact,â I repeated. âWhat kind of contact?â
âIntimate.â His expression remained neutral. âThere were unions between humans and fae. Children born with one foot in each world.â
I nearly choked on my sandwich. âAre you saying Iâm part fae?â
âNot in any meaningful biological sense. The actual fae DNA has been diluted over centuries. But the magical potentialâthat remains. Itâs why morphs can handle energies that would kill ordinary humans. Itâs why your mother could absorb fae magic directly. And itâs why the Courts are so interested in people like you.â
I put down my sandwich, appetite gone. âSo weâre whatâthe magical equivalent of mixed-race kids that nobody wants to acknowledge?â
âMore like the descendants of ancient royalty that both sides want to either control or eliminate.â He took a bite of his sandwich, chewing methodically. âThe Courts both fear what might happen if morphs ever realized their full potential.â
âWhich is what, exactly?â
âThatâs the question, isnât it?â He stood, gesturing for me to follow. âFinish your sandwich. Thereâs something I need to show you.â
I grabbed the remainder of my food and trailed after him down a hallway Iâd never been allowed to enter as a kid. At the end was a door I remembered all too wellâthe forbidden room. The one that had been locked my entire childhood, the one Iâd tried and failed to pick my way into multiple times.
